This blog itself is one of my experiments as I try to figure out what to do with my life. I’ve been debating starting a blog for a while and finally decided to take the leap. I honestly have no idea what this will turn into, whether anyone will read this, or whether I’ll actually keep it.
I’ve kicked around the idea of popular science writing as a profession. I believe that in order to move forward as a society we need a more scientifically literate population, and that that won’t happen unless there is effort to cross the chasm of non-understanding by both parties, the lay man and the scientist. I would like to be one of the scientists who do that, who tries to make science more accessible.
No matter what I end up doing, I foresee public outreach and education being an important part of it. Being an effective writer would be a great asset, so this blog is a way to practice writing, because after all, “practice makes perfect”. Please feel free to critique, ask questions, or make comments about my topics or writing throughout the blog. I also hope to write some pieces more popular science style.
The rest of the blog is a sampling of my other interests: Crafting, Gardening, Cooking (and food in general), and other random topics. I hope to make every post at least a little informative and interesting. A pattern in what I post may emerge as time goes on, but it’s way too early to tell.
Oh, and as for why I named my blog Experiment No. 1. Cambridge Dictionaries define an experiment as a test done in order to learn something or to discover whether something works or is true. This blog is a test, the first of many I hope to undertake over the next few years, to discover whether blogging, and writing in general, works for me.
